Practising it is crucial for our health and happiness.

The last weeks were so hectic and busy that my self care routine for sure pulled down the list, and i have paid a price for it. No doubt.

Self care. We’re pretty sure that you’ve heard that phrase floating around. It’s become almost like a buzzword lately, where everyone from the celebrities online to your local gym trainer is raving about it. But what is self care? Why is it important?

Self care isn’t just some sudden trend that’s popped up in the media over the past few years. It’s actually a vital part of a healthy, well balanced lifestyle. After all, if you aren’t looking after yourself, then how can you function in a way that will give you a fulfilling life?

It is no longer just a saying and the benefits to our personal happiness and fulfilment are nothing to overlook.

Too many times in life we choose to put or body’s and emotional needs last because of “ too many things to do, too many other people to take care of”. We get carried away by running after being busy and fulfilling everyone’s needs from us.

I can share with you that i  have faced too many times when i said “ i will schedule this precious me time later when  i’m done with x,y and z” and that later turned into total burn out or anxiety.

It’s an ongoing lesson and i always try to walk my talks and help you learn from my lessons, because everything i want to give you so you will avoid pain or gain more pleasure comes from my experience.

It has many layers – from saying No to things you don’t want, to taking the time in nature or let someone else take care of you. I can be in times very good in one aspect and neglecting another and the price of getting to the point where my body really forces me to stop and give myself the full care is a price better to avoid. It is not synonymous with self-indulgence or being selfish. Self-care means taking care of yourself so that you can be healthy, you can be well, you can do your job, you can help and care for others, and you can do all the things you need to and want to accomplish with ease and joy.

The need for self-care is obvious. We have an epidemic of anxiety and depression, in a society that is pushing us to achieve and run all the time we often pay the price if we don’t fill ourself first. It is part of the answer to how we can all better cope with daily stressors. People are feeling lonelier and less able to unwind and slow down, which makes them feel more anxious and overwhelmed by even the simplest tasks.

What Is Self-Care, and Why Is It Critical for Your Well-Being?

Self-care is taking steps to tend to your physical and emotional health needs to the best of your ability.

It requires checking in with yourself and asking yourself how you’re doing and what your body’s asking for.

From physical self care: exercise, get enough sleep, care for your skin, get regulars treatments that support your wellbing and confidence et

To emotional and spiritual self care: gratitude, connect with people, meditation, feeding our mind etc.

They all influence our overall health and joy.

Engaging in self-care regularly could help you put your best foot forward. “When we are regularly taking care of ourselves, we are better able to react to the things that go on in our lives. When self-care is regularly practised, the benefits are broad and have even been linked to positive health outcomes such as reduced stress, improved immune system, increased productivity, and higher self-esteem,

Types of Self-Care

It could be anything that floats your boat — anything that puts a smile on your face.

  • Emotional self-care, such as self-talk, weekly bubble baths, saying “no” to things that cause unnecessary stress, giving yourself permission to take a pause, or setting up a weekly coffee date with a friend, receiving face or body treatment
  • Physical self-care, such as prioritizing sleep, adopting an exercise routine you can stick with, get a face or body treatment, choosing healthy and nourishing foods over highly processed ones
  • Spiritual self-care, such as attending a religious service, spending time in nature, meditating, incorporating regular acts of kindness into your day, or keeping a gratitude journal

How self care benefits our health and happiness

Many common self-care practices have been linked to longevity and other positive health outcomes

The following self-care practices have been well-researched and linked to a longer life. Here are some examples of self care:

  • Exercise People who exercised between two and eight hours per week throughout their lives reduced their risk of dying by 29 to 36 percent,

Finding Purpose According to the researchers behind a May 2019 study published in JAMA Network Open, having a strong life purpose was associated with decreased mortality rates.

Diet Eating a diet filled with fruits and vegetables per day was associated with a lower risk of mortality, especially from heart-related issues.

Sleep A study published in September 2017 in the Journal of the American Heart Association found too-little sleep (less than seven hours per night) was linked with higher mortality rates, sleep is a big pillar of health!

Allowing someone else to care for us  like the heart that pumps blood to itself first, we can not give or care for others when we are empty. The more we try the more our health and emotional state will be effected on a bad way, allowing ourself to take time and enjoy a care of others is crucial.
