Which skincare tips we all wished we knew ?

I have a lot of younger clients in the salon looking for skincare tips. It started me thinking about 5 Skincare tips we all wish we known in our 20’s. Young people seem to be so much more aware of the health of their skin and how to look after it than ever before. This is great, but I don’t want social media influencers to be their main source of advice! Often these ‘experts’ have minimal experience and no qualifications.

So, I’ve put together 5 skincare tips for life, to start when you are young.  This would have helped everyone to work towards healthy skin. These tips apply to everyone, whether you are 20 or 50+. There are a lot of misconceptions about skincare and skin health. Mostly created by large corporations looking to sell more products. I’m here to help you to get to the facts!

So, which skincare tips would younger me have found most useful:

SKINCARE TIP 1 – DON’T OVER-EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN

This is a big one and something that nearly everyone does, without even realising it. With the layering product trend at the moment, people don’t realise that they are using ingredients that could be double exfoliating their skin. Most people are aware that scrubs exfoliate. Did you know that enzymes, acids such as AHAs, different fruit acids and salicylic acid also exfoliate the skin? On top of this, a lot of people now use retinol which also has exfoliating properties.  If you’re using a scrub to exfoliate twice a week, use a cleanser with enzymes and your serums with AHAs or retinol! You are 100% in the territory of over-exfoliation.

Why is this bad? Most people will think this is great as it’s exposing new skin cells and giving them brighter skin. Which it will at first! Over time you are stripping the protective layer the skin needs to stay healthy. It will become dull and dehydrated. You may also start to cause inflammation in the skin, so if you suffer from acne or rosacea this will definitely get worse. Solution? switch to a gentle Natural face cleanser, a good serum and cream that doesn’t exfoliate.

SKINCARE TIP 2 – SOME MOISTURISERS DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD

Many cosmetic moisturisers are damaging your skin’s ability to moisturise itself! Yes, your skin does know how to keep itself moisturised. We often need some form of added help as with pollution, aircon or heating. Moisture is lost making skin dry. If you don’t use a cream that works with the skin’s natural process of moisturisation you can end up with ‘lazy skin’ that is no longer able to moisturise itself. This results in a cycle of using more and more moisturisers to solve a problem that unwittingly you are making worse. So, look at your labels – if your moisturiser has paraffin, petroleum or isopropyl myristate, then I’d change it quickly. All these ingredients disrupt the skin’s barrier and make it lazy. A good moisturiser to prevent this is natural and healthy available in the shop , find out more here.

SKINCARE TIP 3 – WEAR SPF 30 AND ABOVE DAILY – WHATEVER THE WEATHER!

I hope more younger people are aware of this now. The UV rays are always attacking our skin, even in winter. It’s really important to wear SPF 30+ every single day. I use natural sun protection that i mix in my cream or the Natural sun protection for my body.  because it’s so easy to use and I don’t have to remember that extra layer.

SKINCARE TIP 4 – REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP EVERY NIGHT.

To be fair I’ve always been pretty good at this one! I can remember many a night my friends found it amusing that I had to take my make-up off at 2 am when they just crashed in bed. Now in their 40s, they get why I did it and wish they had removed theirs too!

Every night our skin repairs and renews itself, working to repair itself from any damage and pollution it’s been exposed to. It’s been proven through scientific studies, that not taking your makeup off at night skin will age skin prematurely. This is because makeup mixed with dirt and pollution that builds on the skin can hinder its ability to successfully regenerate, leading to a breakdown of collagen in the skin. Collagen keeps skin firm and supple, so when it’s not getting produced effectively, the skin will start to sag quicker, and lines will appear.

This Makeup remover is super easy and quick to use!

SKINCARE TIP 5 – WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR BODY IS AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU PUT IN IT

Our skin is an organ and like all organs, it needs vitamins and minerals to stay healthy. Have you ever been on a health kick and noticed that your skin has started to glow? This is because it gets all the nutrition it needs to produce healthy, happy skin cells. Similarly, if you’ve been not eating well, I bet you’ve noticed it in your skin too – it has possibly become more inflamed, and breakouts have occurred. If you aren’t someone who wants to spend a lot on skincare but wants healthy glowing skin, then look at what you’re eating, get a healthy diet full of different coloured fruit and veg and this will change your complexion without the need to change much in your skincare.
